Germany is also known as the Federal Republic of Germany & it is also the heart of Europe. It is the 6th largest country in Europe. Germany was a compilation of 1000 small states and 350 principalities in the middle of the 19th century.

Heidelberg is a college town of southwest Germany, reputed for its universities and romantic cityscape. Surrounded by forested hills, it sits on the banks of the Neckar River. The Old Town is filled with museums and historical buildings like the Church of the Holy Spirit, the Karl Theodor Bridge, and a castle that mixes Gothic and Renaissance styles. Introduction

Heidelberg University Germany is one of the oldest & prestigious universities in the world. It was established in the year 1386. Heidelberg comprises three significant campuses: the humanities are predominantly located in Heidelberg’s Old Town, the natural sciences and medicine in the Neuenheimer Feld quarter, and the social sciences within the inner-city suburb Bergheim. The successes of Heidelberg University in the Excellence Competitions and in international rankings are evidence of its leading role on the academic scene. In the Excellence Initiative of 2006/07 and 2012 the university was successful with all its proposals and received funding for its institutional strategy “Heidelberg: Realising the Potential of a Comprehensive University” as well as for the two Clusters of Excellence “Cellular Networks” and “Asia and Europe in a Global Context”. Three graduate schools were also funded – the Heidelberg Graduate School for Physics, the Heidelberg Biosciences International Graduate School and the Heidelberg Graduate School of Mathematical and Computational Methods for the Sciences.

Education Base

The Medical Faculty in Heidelberg is one of the oldest medical faculties in Germany, with an international reputation. Students benefit from outstanding opportunities for study and research. The degree programme in Medicine lasts for a minimum of six years and three months and consists in three training phases:

Course Sturcture

Heidelberg University has two medical faculties; one in Heidelberg, and one in Mannheim. The Medical degree programme offered in Mannheim (Modellstudiengang, MaReCuM) breaks teaching down into integrated modules, which moves beyond classical understandings of the study of medicine to focus on organs and clinical manifestations of illness. This focus reflects the explicit integration of clinical research with fundamental research and teaching at the Centre for Biomedicine and Medical Technology in Mannheim (Centrum für Biomedizin und Medizintechnik in Mannheim, CBTM), which was established specifically for the delivery of the MaReCuM.

Lectures and courses are organised in modules. During stage I studies, teaching focusses on science and specific organs. At the same time, the link between scientific knowledge and relevant content from later clinical study is emphasised. This provides students with the basic medical knowledge and offers them initial insight into the human organism as a whole: Students learn to understand why humans can walk, how the nervous system functions, and why the human heart keeps on beating. Courses and lectures are also structured into modules during stage 2 studies of the MaReCuM. Students are taught in seminars and practical groups and interdisciplinary, clinical training is addressed as an integrated part of the curriculum.

The entire MaReCuM degree programme is orientated towards the core competencies required by medical doctors. As such, the ethics of medical practice are also included in the curriculum, as well as medical communication, working with patients, and health economics. From the very beginning of the course, students are supported by mentors who provide feedback on their performance. The practice year in Mannheim is divided into four phases, with a compulsory period spent in “ambulatory medicine”. This compulsory element of the course reflects the fact that an increasing number of illnesses are treated by ambulatory medical services, rather than through inpatient care. During this phase, students learn about the necessary treatment processes

Research

The Heidelberg campus connects the numerous medical institutes and clinics which form part of the University clinic and sustains links to other faculties of the University where research focusses on the life sciences and the humanities. In addition, the Medical Faculty Heidelberg cooperates successfully with a number of large, external research institutes.

Research at the Faculty focusses in particular on infectious diseases, cardiovascular research, neurology, translational and individualised oncology, transplantation and individualised immunotherapy. The Medical Faculty makes an important contribution to the specialist research conducted for the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) and centres for health research. The large number of research centres within the medical community in Heidelberg enables students to participate in numerous laboratory and research projects, pursue a doctorate and make contacts for any work they conduct in the field in the future. Students are supported by courses and advisory services offered as part of the Faculty’s doctoral programme.
